Mirrors of the Heart
The films of Pedro Almodóvar entertain us with a dreamy, libidinous consciousness, opening hidden truths about the human heart.  Almodóvar takes us to a parallel universe where the ties of friendship are stronger than the bindings of conventionality, and where in caring for his characters we enter into surprising identification with them.  As Almodóvar said, "My vision of desire [is] something that's both very hard and very human. By this I mean the absolute necessity of being desired and the fact that in the interplay of desires it's rare that two desires meet and correspond."

This one-day symposium sponsored by the New Center for Psychoanalysis and held in cooperation with the UCLA Department of Biobehavioral Sciences and Psychiatry examines Almodóvar's films from several post-Freudian psychoanalytic perspectives.  The film Talk to Her and extensive use of clips from other Almodóvar movies illustrate and highlight the discussions.

Their lives flow in all directions, past, present and future, pulling them towards an unsuspected destiny.  The film's themes include the difficulty of communication between the sexes, loneliness and intimacy, and the persistence of love beyond loss.
