Plans to curtail the surveillance powers wielded by local authorities are currently going through parliament in the Protection of Freedoms Bill. It contains measures that will limit the current scope of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) and further regulate the deployment of surveillance cameras (both CCTV and ANPR).
