Dear List members,

I wonder if u would add in something about Jeanine having a diagnosed mental health need (she has PTSD symptoms following her first period of detention) and we have been working to reduce these for some time now. She saw a Psychiatrist in CAMHS who told her she needn’t worry cos she wasn’t a “nutter”. Jeanine quite rightly refused to go back after this for the Counselling the Psychiatrist recommended so we have been working it through together for some time now. ( I did of course make a complaint!)

The UKBA taunting Jeanine and my other girls didn’t help when they came to my house without permission or notice and quizzed the girls (aged 11, 12, 13 and 17 ) 3 days before Xmas in 2009, I must add without an adult present or when 5 of them (4 men and 1 woman) lifted her bodily into the back of a meat wagon with no windows last Thursday, while three police officers stood by just in case they were needed! And some people say we don’t live in a Police state I know first hand this is not the case.

See the long version of what has happened to Jeanine attached for those people who want a fuller explanation.

I should add that I am not a fan of diagnosis but we need to speak to the Immigration Judge in a way she / he will understand and if we can convince her / him that Jeanine and my relationship is above and beyond a usual mother daughter relationship as then we have a greater chance of Jeanine being granted asylum under the Human Rights Act Article 8 the right to a family life as the threshold of proof is quite high and the responsibility for proving this lies with us as a family.

It’s actually the opposite of the guilty till proven innocent assumption that goes on in Criminal law, in Immigration Law the assumption is that you are NOT credible till u prove that you are and it is up to you to do so.

I know our relationship goes beyond their requirements already as we have a close and abiding bond that belies the length of time we have spent together as mother and daughter but try convincing someone of this when they are adamant that they are not going to be convinced is hard and this is where I think the “professional” standing of members of this list could be of use to us all in our struggle

Thank u to for considering this action on our behalf,

Jacx

Yes, a collective statement from us in support of Jeanine is imperative here. This is the statement (below) I signed the petition with in case it helps with the collective statement. I would suggest sending the letter to national press offices and to Liberty.
p

"Do not deport Jeanine Kamba. It would be a unconscionable act that would seriously undermine the moral authority of the Home Office and place Jeanine at serious risk of psychological and physical harm. I urge the Home Office to act with compassion and give leave to Jeanine to stay with her family in the UK so she can have a future with a community that cares.

Dear List members,

You will be aware from Jacqui Lovell's post of the attempts by the United Kingdom Border Agency to remove Jacqui's daughter, Jeanine, from the UK to the Democratic Republic of Congo where she would be separated from her family and at high risk of atrocities.

A number of us have signed the petition as individuals. I am writing to propose that we collectively write on behalf of Jeanine and her family, as a group of community psychologists. There is some reason for hope that deploying what social power is attached to being qualified “professional' psychologists might have some influence in this case.

There is real urgency about this as the UK Border Authority proposes to remove Jeanine next Friday and in the meantime Jeanine is in Yarls Wood Detention Centre.

As before I suggest that if there are no objections within 48 hours, we take that as a sign of agreement to a collective list statement lobbying for Jeanine's right to stay with her family in the UK being sent.

In the mean time as a default I will liaise with Jacqui to co-draft a letter on behalf of the list and circulate it to the list for provisional approval. I would be very happy if someone else wished to produce a draft instead. Perhaps someone already has?

best wishes

David

SAVE OUR SISTER: An appeal from the Lovell – Kamba Family

Jeanine Kamba is to be removed from the UK on Friday after being detained by the UK Border Authority.

Jeanine, 18, came to the UK in 2005 after fleeing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Her father died in 1995 and her mother went missing in 2003 and has not been seen since. Her older brother Blaise took responsibility for both Jeanine and her sister Leitichia, but was forced to return to the DRC in 2009, despite objections from senior Bishops of the Church of England and local media, amid serious concerns for his well-being.
After returning to the DRC, Blaise was imprisoned. We secured his release 18 months ago and since then he has not been seen or heard from.

Since arriving in the UK, Jeanine has been in full-time education and is currently pursuing an NVQ Level Two in Health and Social Care, after earning her Level One qualification. She aims to become a social worker in order to help people in need, and has recently begun to volunteer at a local nursing home.

Jeanine, along with Leitichia, was released from detention into the care of Jacqui Lovell in 2009. She is now considered as much a part of the family as Jacqui’s other 5 children Lauren, Grace and their three younger sisters.

Jeanine’s sister Leitichia now has a son with her partner Jonathan, and is living in London. Now a loving auntie, Jeanine often travels to see her nephew Jensley, and cherishes her time spent with him. She has begun taking vital steps in recovering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the traumatic events in her past. She still suffers from terrible headaches and nightmares, but has made some progress in overcoming these, thanks to counselling from her mother Jacqui.

As required, on Thursday 10th March, Jeanine attended her monthly signing at her local police station where she was forcibly detained by five UKBA officials.

Jeanine is currently being held in Yarls Wood Detention Centre, and is scheduled to be deported back to the DRC, where she has no family or friends, no place to live, and no means of supporting herself.

The DRC has the highest incidence of rape and domestic violence anywhere in the world. If her deportation were to happen, Jeanine is almost certain to be subject to these atrocities.

It is for all these reasons and more that we beg the Home Secretary Teresa May to show leniency and compassion in Jeanine’s case. Jeanine, a teenager who has already suffered far too much for one so young, deserves to remain with her family in the UK, in order to continue her education, and to be allowed time to grow into the wonderful young woman that she is becoming.

It is the power of the people that can often make all the difference. Each signature is important. Please act now.
Please sign the online petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/jeanine_kamba/
