Applications are invited for a joint PhD position between research group of Matthias Rief (TUM), and Kristina Djinovic Carugo (Univ. Vienna) funded by the Marie Curie Initial Training Network on Muscle Z-disk Protein Complexes: from atomic structure to physiological function (ITN MUZIC, http://www.fp7-muzic.eu). The project with focus on biomechanical properties of Z-disk Proteins and Protein Complexes. The successful candidate shall spend initial stage of her/his PhD in the group of K. Djinovic-Carugo, Univ. Vienna for sample generation and characterisation and subsequently in the group of M. Rief, TUM. A series of methods will be used: recombinant DNA technology (PCR, cloning, protein expression systems, site-directed mutagenesis), protein biochemistry (protein purification, protein analytics), structure-function studies on proteins and their complexes (fluorescence anisotropy, ITC), optical tweezers assays and atomic force microscopy at single molecule level. In addition, a close cooperation with cell biologists is established through the ITN-MUZIC network. Interested candidates should apply through Max F. Perutz International PhD Program - Vienna: http://www.projects.mfpl.ac.at/mfpl-phd-selection or contact directly: Matthias Rief <[log in to unmask]> The deadline for the application is 27th of March 2011. -- ****************************************************** Department for Structural and Computational Biology Max F.
