Dear Colleagues,

The Public Services Quality Group (Security and Access)is considering the possible introduction of a national membership card for access to archives in record offices and libraries.

At present there are many different arrangements including the CARN card administered now by the Archives and Records Association. Others have been introduced or modified more recently in response to circumstances or changes of need.

The number of visitors to archives continues to grow partly because of the growing interest in genealogy, family and local history, but also the increased visibility and accessibility of archives through the web and high profile media coverage.

At the same time the issue of security has remained high in the thoughts of many institutions after some recent high profile cases of theft. The issue of an identity card is one weapon we can use to combat this threat.

PSQG would be grateful if you would take five minutes or so to complete this survey. Your answers are vital in setting the parameters for future discussion and development of such a card. We welcome any comments you care to make.

Please will repositories co-ordinate their responses as only one return from each will be sufficient for our needs.

The Survey will remain open until Friday 1 April 2011
