Hi

If this helps I would be happy to pull together a list of must haves/best practice if colleagues can send them to me, as I am currently working on this myself. Or perhaps colleagues at the ECU can assist?

I thoroughly agree with your sentiments Marie. I am pulling together an equality report which will attempt to cover the list of data that EHRC recommend as best practice on the basis that this is the only list available! If I'm missing something, someone please advice! I would really appreciate a definitive list of 'must haves' as well as 'best practice' so that I can give appropriate guidance particularly in areas in which we find difficult to produce good data.
Best regards,
Lyn

Hi all:

To follow up on James first email on equality data and connected to
James' question at Monday's ECU conference (and his and I's discussion
afterwards) I think there is still some confusion about what data in
particular, HEI's will be REQUIRED to publish come the 31st of December.
This confusion is even more so in light of the changes announced to the
specific duties. I believe James' question to the EHRC representative
yesterday (correct me if I'm wrong James), dealt with the 5 part
guidance published on the EHRC website and in particular the publication
of pay equity data. James' attempt to get a definitive answer didn't in
my mind bring about the clarification one would hope for. And in light
of some of the news coverage on the publication of gender pay equity
data (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11900104) I'm still not
sure about what is required by law.

My discussions with other colleagues at other universities reflect some
confusion as well. If one of the purpose of having HEIs publish data is
to allow 'comparisons' then it would make sense that HEIs publish the
same data. How accurate can comparisons be if HEIs are publishing
different data or using different parameters in their calculations of
data (i.e., student data that excludes international student, using FTE
or actual staff numbers, and then there is the whole debate as to using
medium or mean in pay equity data, and this is without getting into the
detail of institutional wide data versus break down by
faculty/departments or subject areas). So I think some clarification on
this would be extremely useful.

Part of the response to the question at Monday's ECU conference was the
argument that HEIs should be publishing this data as part of 'best
practices' but ED practitioners not only provide advice on 'best
practices' but also on what is required by law. So again particular
clarification on this issue by ECU/EHRC would be very welcome. What is
best practices and what is required by law? Maybe another rather blunt
way of asking this question is -- is there any particular data that if a
University does NOT publish will result in the EHRC contacting them and
requiring the publication of said data?

If others think I'm way off base or can shed some clarification on what
is required by law then please do so. If people are as confused as I am
would it be possible to have the ECU ask the EHRC to provide some
clarification on this issue as follow up to the conference?

By the way I did want to say that I really enjoyed the ECU conference
and found it extremely useful.

Thanks

Marie
