Hi all,
I'm working on compiling some research material and resources on forms and methods of snake divination. African and Greek methods seem the most written about, but I'm still early in this game.
If anyone has any suggested resources, they'd be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Andrew Carlson

By divination - would it be snakes as a omen
or as some sort of incubation oracle?

Hi Mogg,
Modern or ancient -- and any time in between -- would be relevant and helpful. As for the second part, again, both. Any and all connections with snakes and serpents as tools of oracular and divinatory agents, symbolically (in the case of dreams) or literally (in the case of physical divination practices/observations).
At this stage I am just trying to create an index of resources and knowledge around the broad topic. No specific directions with it beyond that, just yet.
(Although a side interest of mine is the connection between serpents and bird oracles. I've read a few places that those who spoke the "oracular language of birds" were gifted this power by the kiss, bite, or lick of a snake. I believe these come from Greek sources, but I haven't looked yet. Just working from memory.)
Thanks again,
Andrew

Greetings!
One example.
In the Homer's Iliad an eagle carrying a snake is struck by the serpent
and drops it. The eagle represented the Trojans and the snake the
Greeks, the discomfort of the eagle predicts the Trojans defeat.
My best wishes
Ben
