Naomi Goldenberg
is Professor at the Department of Classics and Religious Studies of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She is the author of The Changing of the Gods: Feminism and the End of Traditional Religion (1979), Returning Words to Flesh: Feminism,
Psychoanalysis, and the Resurrection of the Body (1990) and Resurrecting the Body: Feminism, Religion, and Psychoanalysis (1993) and has given innovative lectures, such as her psychoanalytic reading of Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, throughout the world. She
has a particular interest in the intersection of religion and psychoanalytic theory, gender, and popular culture. Her recent work seeks to bridge the religious/secular divide in social theory.
In this lecture, Gender and the Vestigial State of Religion: Toward Feminist Renewal in Global Politics,' Professor Goldenberg hypothesizes understanding 'religions' as former states and thus states–in–waiting. Through this novel approach, she suggests that
the mystification of religion works against women when states support sexist community/religious leaders who are given power and authority over such areas as ’the family’. This lecture is sure to prove original and challenging and will be of interest to those
working/studying in the areas of religious studies, social and political studies, and psychoanalysis and gender studies.
The lecture, which is sponsored by the Body, Health and Religion Research group, will be presented as part of the RT1217 Religion and Gender module in Humanities room 2.03 from 3 to 4 p.m. All welcome.
