Emmeline Pankhurst and Louise Eates spent the late 19th and early 20th centuries protesting for equal rights. These famous suffragettes were presented with specially commissioned pieces of jewellery by the Women's Social and Political Union to acknowledge their important contribution in the fight for equal voting rights in the UK, granted finally by 1928. Using green for hope, white for purity and purple for dignity, students from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design have produced a collection of bespoke textiles and jewellery <http://www.corkbots.com/fabricsoflife/archives/650> referencing the suffrage movement and women's continued struggle to get their voice heard. Suffrage heirloom jewellery will be awarded to leading women scientists at the reception. After a year, each scientist will pass on her 'science heirloom' as an inspiration to an up-and-coming female researcher. Suffrage Textiles will be showcased by their designers; VV Rouleaux will later produce three commemorative ribbons to unite women across scientific disciplines. Ribbons will be available to purchase from www.vvrouleaux.com from the end of March 2011. For the reception, please RSVP to Brona McVittie ([log in to unmask]). Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
