medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and cultureAre they conflating Alban and Amphibulus - the latter WAS a priest. He's the chap Alban changed clothes with.BMC----- Original Message -----From: [log in to unmask] href="mailto:[log in to unmask]">Rosemary Hayes-Milligan and Andrew MilliganTo: [log in to unmask] href="mailto:[log in to unmask]">[log in to unmask]Sent: Monday, January 31, 2011 4:09 PMSubject: [M-R] England's first Christian martyrmedieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and cultureAre any colleagues aware of early English Christian martyrs who were priests? I ask because my son has been sent home from school with an enormously long quiz, including the question:'Identify the priest who is reckoned to be England's first Christian martyr, killed for his faith'The 'obvious' answer is St Alban - but he was not a priest and it was not England. This may just be one more sad indictment of the level of modern education. The next question is 'identify the priest who wrote the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, finished in 731' - not actually incorrect as Bede was a priest but not the way I would identify him, primarily!Rosemary HayesDr RCE Hayes
