Further to John Dillon's reference to the 4thC. apocryphal Acts of John, the story of John and Crato from that source was taken up into the Golden Legend. You can see a panel of early 13thC. stained glass (which actually ante-dates the final completion of the Golden Legend by about 40 years) from one of the lancets under the South Transept Rose of Lincoln Cathedral that depicts the disciples of Crato smashing precious gems to show their contempt for the world and riches and John then restoring the smashed gems, which led to the conversion of Crato and his disciples.
