Hi Jon,

Good to hear ACE HQ are taking a keen interest in IP and Data Sharing! The Commission is very interested in hearing from arts and broader cultural and creative organisations too. We are chasing these through other channels as well, but it would be great to get your RMs involved. The more responses the better - the position at the moment is that cultural organisations are not making significant economic reuse of their content, which weakens the argument for preserving an exemption.

All best,

Nick

Nick

I'll circulate this call for contributions to our RM digitals in all English ACE regions - is it relevant to arts related orgs too? IP issues and data sharing are now of keen interest at Head Office.

Subject: URGENT Request for contributions - Public Sector Information Directive review

Dear MCG'ers,

As some of you will be aware, the UK community fought a successful
campaign a few years back to win an exemption for museums, archives and
libraries from a piece of EU legislation called the Public Sector
Information Directive.

The Directive essentially places a set of requirements and limitations
on publicly-funded organisations (or those in receipt of any public
funds) around the re-use of your content, including commercial use by
3rd parties.

The Directive is up for review again, and the Collections Trust is
working with partners Curtis and Cartwright and Ithaka on behalf of the
European Commission to review the ways in which cultural organisations
are making use of their content, particularly to generate income. The
outcome will help inform whether or not we can keep the exemption.

We are conducting a 2-stage survey, and I need to ask as many of you as
possible to complete the first stage questionnaire, which takes less
than 5 minutes. We need to ask you to identify someone in your
organisation who would be willing/able to respond to some follow-up
questions about how you are making use of content.

You can complete the survey online at:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/culturalreuse

I know another survey is the last thing many of you want to do right
now, but without evidence of active re-use of content (see the
definitions in the survey), we run the risk of losing the exemption
which will have a long-term impact on the economic model for digital
cultural content.

Please do let me know if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Nick
