FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH IN ITALIAN STUDIES
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of
Glasgow invites applications for its new
Stevenson Postgraduate Scholarships in Italian Studies
We will be offering:
- One PhD scholarship (three years) starting September/October
2011.
Value: £10,000 per annum for three years to cover fees and a
contribution towards living expenses. The scholarship holder
will be expected to teach an average of 2 hours per week during
term-time.
- Scholarship for MPhil By Research (one year masters degree by
research, dissertation of 30,000-40,000 words) starting
September/October 2011
Value: £5,000 for one year to cover fees and a contribution
towards living expenses.
- Scholarship for MPhil By Research starting September/October
2011
Value: Fees only
Research in Italian
Research in Italian at Glasgow is focused on Modern and Contemporary
Italy and staff are able to supervise a wide range of literary,
historical and cultural topics. Details of individual staff

Successful applicants will benefit from being part of the lively
research culture and friendly environment of Italian and of the
School ofModern Languages and Cultures in general. They will also be
supported by the Graduate School in the College of Arts, which
exists to develop the personal and academic skills of postgraduates
and to enhance the student experience by providing workshops,
training opportunities, research funding, and social networking
events. Postgraduates in the College of Arts regularly organise
conferences and they write, edit, and publish an electronic journal,

Postgraduates also form an important part of a broader research
community working on Modern Italy in a range of disciplines across
Scotland, and whose activities include shared seminars and frequent
events supported or organised by the Italian Cultural Institute.
Eligibility
In order to be considered you must have been offered a place on a
postgraduate programme. The scholarships are open to UK and non-UK

There is no separate application form for the Stevenson
Scholarships; applicants for either a PhD or MPhil by research in
Italian Studies will automatically be considered but must apply
by 31st March 2011.
