The Boundary Estate was opened
in the East End of London in 1900. Built from 1890 by London County Council and
reputedly the world’s first council housing.

Subject: Early Council
Housing
We have been reviewing our records of Council Housing
recently – they include cottage tenements built in 1902 by Wolverhampton Borough
(and demolished in the late 20th century). We are told that
this was very early for a municipal housing scheme (the next one in
Wolverhampton wasn’t until 1919). I wondered if anyone else had records of
Council Housing from a similar early period?
