Tim Burton's Batman unleashed the comic book movie on us (I know Superman beforehand so perhaps...) which we are still undergoing. And Braveheart became a template for all those prebattle oration two large bodies of men running at each other to clash in the middle. Fellowhsip of the Ring inaugerated a decade of Fantasy after fantasy had disappeared up Conan's sizeable behind.
I love Malick but I'm not how influential he has been. I can only think of one film that has Malick's fingerprints on it and that would be Andrew Dominic's Assassinatio of Jesse James.

What most intrigues me about this topic is that, at the quality end of the
influential films, they are most likely to indicate the true geniuses of
cinema, as Kant would see them. Kant argued that genius is what gave the
rule to art, and that geniuses were the influential ones who started new
movements and genres.
In that light, what directors have been the true geniuses of the period
1990-2010?
