Thanks, Felice. I do agree with
your valuable thoughts.
I came across this topic while
reading a book on clinical guidelines. Available at: http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=1863
Many thanks
Best Regards

Subject: R: WHY ARE POLICY MAKERS INTERESTED IN GUIDELINES?
Hi Javed,
i can tell you that usually
clinicians are not “in love” with guidelines for a lot of reasons.
You can find in this list a lot of email about the topic. Sometime guidelines
are considered as limitations for EBM at POC for patient.
However policy makers should go
on this for concerns about quality of care, variability in use of drugs for the
same clinical problem, risk. EB guideline in use can cause costs reduction but
sometime costs are increased (direct cost, drug, devices..). Sure you have
applied evidence based health care principles. These should be a way to
evaluate assistance and real health care among different hospitals. Patients
should be trained about the value of guideline in use in HC settings.
Felice

Oggetto: WHY ARE POLICY MAKERS INTERESTED IN GUIDELINES?
Dear All,
I was going through the topic of clinical guidelines and
their relevance with policy makers. Would like to hear thoughts from the group.
Some excerpts:
Some would explain the
interest in practice guidelines shown by legislators, regulators, and
purchasers of health care (as contrasted with practitioners and patients) with
a single phrase: out-of-control health care costs. Although the importance of
costs as a stimulus for guidelines should not be understated, concerns about
quality of care, risk management, and improved patient outcomes also figure
prominently in the call for more and better practice guidelines….
Scientific evidence and clinical judgment can be
systematically combined to produce clinically valid, operational
recommendations for appropriate care that can and will be used to persuade
clinicians, patients, and others to change their practices in ways that lead to
better health outcomes and lower health care costs.
Thanks and Regards
Javed
