Postgraduate degrees in Iberian and Latin American Studies 

Newcastle University is home to an important group of scholars with research interests in Spain, Portugal and Latin American countries. Our expertise covers a range of Social Science and Humanities disciplines from sociology, politics, human geography, environmental studies, urban planning, and business studies, to history, anthropology, cultural studies, film studies, music, linguistics and sociolinguistics. Our research and teaching activity is broad in disciplinary expertise and thematic interests, and is supported by language training in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Quechua. Postgraduate projects are co-supervised by interdisciplinary teams from across the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences including the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, tailored to individual interests, and students immediately become part of a lively and nurturing research environment http://www.ncl.ac.uk/niassh/americas/. Funding opportunities exist at both Masters and Doctoral levels.

For research projects in the Humanities:

AHRC Block Partnership Award in Iberian-Latin American Studies offered by the School of Modern Languages. Internal deadline for applications: 2 March 2011, 5 pm.

For research projects in the Social Sciences:

North East ESRC Doctoral Training Centre - Iberian-Latin American Studies Pathway. Applicants interested in a Social Science topic related to Spain, Portugal or Latin America can apply for an ESRC Postgraduate Research Studentship, for Masters + Doctoral training. Students follow the MA in Latin American Interdisciplinary Studies as part of the programme, which includes language training in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan or Quechua where appropriate. Deadline for applications: 25 March, 2011, 5 pm.

Applications for both doctoral schemes should be accompanied by a Research Proposal written in consultation with a prospective supervisor, and candidates should also have an offer of a University place from the Graduate School.
