You ARE asking about the BPS, implicitly, Craig. You're saying about how the BPS resists change and then asking if the setting up of the commpsy section has achieved one of its proposals (to change/influence the BPS):
'I'm not suggesting changing the BPS but this was one of many proposed reasons to form the Section. Given it was a Section aim I would be interested to know if any officers think they have changed anything'.
And I don't imagine the BPS is going to go anywhere with the ECT debate, just like it didn't before. I don't think the world has moved on at all but I'm still often shocked by my own naivete - e.g. couldn't have imagined the Psychologist would have a problem with a special issue about the impact of the cuts! Think I must have spent too much time climbing the magic faraway tree!

Penny, I am not asking about the BPS. I'm asking if the Section officers have seen any community oriented changes. I actually don't know why anyone would bother to change it. The Society, like any system will shift with the Zeitgeist. Internal change is rather like asking the liver to shift the purpose of the human body as if the liver can do such a thing without accompanying changes from other organs, the human's environment etc.

Hi David (and all)
Regarding the special issue of the Psychologist, we're in the process of contacting contributors to get a more detailed proposal together.  The editor, Jon Sutton, is planning a news item regarding the cuts, for the next issue of the Psychologist. However, with regards our proposal of a special issue, with contributions from yourself, clin psych, ed psych, health psych, etc, Jon was worried that there isn't enough to say. He also said that The Psychologist isn't necessarily the place to get into discussion over how those cuts are implemented, so asked, what's left for discussion. He was worried that we wouldn't be able to make the issue engaging, informative and practical. So when we wrote back saying we had no worries about there being nothing to say, he asked us for the more detailed proposal.

So I think all of the above fits in with what Craig is asking/saying - who exactly is the BPS serving, who is able to influence it and who is allowed to have a say?

Best wishes
Penny

Hi Craig and all,

I am aware of two uses of the phrase

Erica posted "Please can any officer of the Community Psychology Section advise me whether the section is producing a statement or advice to Local Councils on the effects of cuts to services" and Greta earlier used the phrase in her post "a complete record of the damage these cuts are having on people and services should be made and regularly posted to the Government, I would also be interested in anything so far done by Community Psychology officers".

I assume the phrase is being used  to refer to office bearers in the Community Psychology Section of the BPS. Jacqui Akhurst  is the Chair of the current Section Committee, Ho Law is the treasurer and various other people - inclusing me - are serving on this in different ways,  although it should be remembered that this committee is only an interim arrangement pending the election of office bearers by the Section membership at its first AGM. As a member of the Section interim committee. I know that two members of the interim section committee are involved in  trying to draft an article which would 'exemplify some of the values and praxis of community psychology' and hope to include case studies of 'community psychology in practice'. I think it would be great if at least one case study addressing the cuts was included. I am confident Sally (Zlotowitz) would be pleased to hear of any suggestions.

This List (this list) does not have 'officers' of course (as opposed to co-moderators) nor any formal structure of authority within it (thank goodness) but occasionally a 'statement' has been produced quasi-collectively by List members including more recently our Statement of concern by members of The UK Community Psychology Discussion List regarding Dr Kenneth Zucker’s invited keynote lecture at the British Psychological Society Division of Clinical Psychology Conference 2010 and further back the York Poverty Statement on poverty. The production of a list statement re the cuts from a community psychology standpoint would be possible in principle.

Separately I happen to be aware via John (Cromby) (not an officer as far as I am aware) that the Midlands group is considering writing collaboratively with others about the 'implications of the cuts' but don't know where this is up to.

best wishes,

David

A couple of emails have come down from the ether asking about "Community Psychology Officers." I should probably know this, but who are they? And are they another "they?"
