Amgen Job Description

We are seeking a Scientist in the Protein Biochemistry group within the Protein Sciences Department in our Thousand, Oaks CA facility.

Responsibilities include purification of proteins for X-ray crystallography, with a focus on membrane proteins. Work closely with other Amgen scientists in the design of protein constructs, expression of these constructs in bacterial, insect, and mammalian hosts, characterization of the purified proteins, and the application of the purified proteins in crystallization screens.

Basic Qualifications

Finalizing or completed Doctorate degree
OR
Master’s degree and 3 years of directly related experience
OR
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of directly related experience

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree in a biological science and at least two years of directly related experience in academia or industry OR Master’s degree and at least 6 years of directly related experience

Background in general biology with a solid working knowledge of protein biochemistry

Extensive experience in the purification of ion channels and/or G-protein coupled receptors for crystallography.

Participated in the purification of one or more membrane proteins leading to publication of the crystal structure

Experience with Akta protein purification systems

Strong interpersonal skills – works well as part of a team and independently
Ability to work effectively in a matrix research organization
Ability to plan, execute, and evaluate experiments with limited supervision

Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills

Ability to report progress and results to direct manager on a regular basis
