Posted on behalf of Jenny Atchison,

This is a call for papers for a session entitled ‘Human-plant bio-geographies’ to be held at the 2011 Institute of Australian Geographers Conference, University of Wollongong, July 3-6.

Human-plant bio-geographies

Session coordinators Lesley Head and Jenny Atchison, University of Wollongong

Plants are fundamental players in human lives, underpinning our food supply and contributing to the air we breathe, but they are easy to take for granted and have received much less attention in the recent social sciences than have animals. In this session we invite papers that approach human-plant relations from diverse theoretical perspectives, using a range of methodologies - human geography, biogeography and archaeology among them. We particularly invite presenters keen to engage in conversations across sub/disciplinary boundaries. Questions include but are not restricted to:
-	How relevant is the analytical category ‘plant’ for the multitude of ways that plants are embedded in human lives, and vice versa?
-	How do different spatial scales of analysis help us understand human-plant bio-geographies differently?
-	How do we do ‘ethno’-methodologies of plants? What other methodological challenges do we face?
-	Many different boundary practices are involved in human-plant relations (mapping, taxonomy, designation as invasive/native/alien, between scientific disciplines). How have these played out in different times and spaces, with what implications for future sustainability questions?

Please a) submit your abstract directly, via email, to Jenny Atchison ([log in to unmask]), by March 1 and b) when our online abstract submission goes ‘live’ (hopefully by Feb 11) you should ALSO submit your abstract online, ticking the session for which you wish to be considered. (An email will be sent to the IAG email list as soon as the online abstract submission goes ‘live’ on the conference website.)

Some travel subsidy may be possible for postgraduate and ECR presenters coming from overseas. Please contact Lesley Head ([log in to unmask]) to discuss.
