Dear all

This is a very timely discussion from our point of view. We are prioritising this work going in to 2011/12 academic year. As the comments make clear, there is a need to develop the approach and methodology from our earlier work so that it is credible and robust in a new fiscal environment. We are already talking to Treasury and BIS about what they need to see, and what their own modelling is telling them. I will let you know more as the details of our work (including timescales) emerge through discussion with our members and other groups we are talking to, but in the meantime if anyone has any useful experiences or feedback I'd be extremely grateful to hear them, either through this list or directly on the address below.

Best wishes
Juliet

Dear All

I've been looking into this very issue this week myself so if anyone
does have any further information on this, if would be most grateful if
you let me know too.

I understand that the modelling system was orginally developed by Ursula
Kelly at the University of Strathclyde on behalf of UUK - I have emailed
to ask if there are any plans to update the model's parameters but have
not yet had a response. Will let you know if I do.

Estimating the impact of value adding university activity to the regional and national economies can be a useful marketing tool as it puts into context the importance of such activity and the economic impact is far more reaching than many would expect.

However, given that the model was created in 2007, at a time when the economy was in a far healthier state than at present, I can’t help but feel that the underlying economic parameters are quickly becoming obsolete and the outputs produced are invalid.

I suppose my question here is whether there is a more recent and suitable model out there or if anyone is working on an alternative modelling system / tool and if so will this be made available for use by a wider audience?
