Programme outline
The Context & Issues:
One of the Government’s principal concerns in the 2010 Education White Paper is improving behaviour in schools. The Coalition has declared its intention to strengthen the powers of teachers, raise expectations of headteachers, increase the focus on Ofsted inspections and pilot new approaches to permanent exclusions. Delegates at this Westminster Briefing will have the opportunity to examine issue of behaviour in schools and consider the implication for teachers and headteachers in primary, special & secondary schools, governing bodies and local authorities. Key issues to be discussed include:
The Education White Paper and its implications for behaviour and attendance
The Coalition's focus on improving behaviour
The new laws with regard to disciplining pupils: the use of force, search and confiscation
Engaging parents and carers in positive behaviour strategies
Links between attendance and behaviour in schools; strategies to reduce school absence
How SEN can best be recognised in schools’ policies on behaviour & discipline
Protecting teachers against false allegations
The use of fixed term and permanent exclusions
Introducing “no-notice detentions”
The role of short stay centres / pupil referral units
Objectives & Outcomes:
The morning policy session will allow participants to engage with the panel in discussion over the principles and practical implications of the Government’s policy toward behaviour and attendance in schools. The afternoon policy into practice session will be highly interactive, with case study examples from primary, special and secondary schools as well as group discussions focusing on current examples of best practice.
