Seminar  Friday 27th May 2011

Preliminary Notice

At Kew Bridge Steam Museum we have, for 35 years, successfully and safely operated stationary steam engines built in the first half of the 19th century. We may have had our moments, but there have been no significant incidents in this time. Have we been lucky? Could we do more to ensure that this continues, that our visitors will be safe and that we, as operators, are not taking undue risks with our future – not only of ourselves but the whole steam and old machinery movement.

The approach to safety matters in manufacturing industry, in transport, and in the off-shore world has become much more rigorous in recent years following accidents which, with hindsight, should not have occurred. Is the gap between the standards in the outside world and what is currently practiced in our movement opening up to a degree that will be publically and officially unacceptable should an incident occur?

During visits to similar museums we have enjoyed many discussions on these matters, found many common problems and have noted different solutions. We are aware that the successful heritage railway movement has also met and overcome similar problems of safety and finance. Is there something to be learned from them?

A review of these thoughts is the purpose of our seminar. We plan to have speakers from the industrial heritage world, from the railway world, from the HSE and insurance business.

We will also cover the nature of our market and how to continue to attract visitors to our offerings.

And for a little entertainment, we will run our unique Bull engine over lunch and give participants an opportunity to see more of our museum than is normally open to the public.
