I asked similar questions of people in our religion department about two years ago, and was pointed to the HarperCollins Study Bible. It's based on the NRSV, but I was told contained the most currently informed scholarly data/notes of any one-volume text. Likewise for the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary. Kugel's How to Read the Bible is full of useful things for the Jewish Bible.
