Please see below further information about the following events, all of which still have places available:

ATLAS.ti Introductory Software Workshop, 26th January 2011, Guildford, UK

Software Planning Seminar (free), 27th January 2011, Guildford, UK

DRS/QUIC Showcase Event: CAQDAS, Digital Social Research and the Digital Replay System, 23 March 2011, Oxford, UK

To book places or to find out about other forthcoming events please see http://caqdas.soc.surrey.ac.uk/Training/calendar.html

All these events are organised in association with Qualitative Innovations in CAQDAS (QUIC), a research node of the ESRC National Centre for Research methods (NCRM). QUIC runs various events throughout the year. We have no commercial ties with any software developer or distributor and provide independent advice, training and support in the use of a range of qualitative software packages.

Wednesday, 26th January 2011
ATLAS.ti 6 introductory workshop, 10.00am – 4.30pm/5.00pm

Presenters: Christina Silver & Graham Hughes

Course Outline: ATLAS.ti Version 6, developed by Scientific Software, Berlin. is a CAQDAS package suited to the management and analysis of qualitative data i.e. text and multimedia data/information. In the one day context the overall emphasis is on the management of text although a short demonstration concerning basic handling of different multimedia types can be included if required by participants.  The workshop focuses on ways to organise both the data and the project itself. We code the data, create memo's which centralise thematic work and writing, create networks which allow us to explore and visually express themes, our ideas about them and their connections with other issues We aim to encourage the effective use of some of the most important tools available in the software. Overview demonstrations at the beginning and towards the end of the day provide a longer term sense of direction. The remainder of the workshop is in fully supported hands-on format. The same sample data is used by everyone during the workshop to enable the group to focus on the same tasks at the same time.

The course will suit those who are complete beginners and those who have looked at the software and tried to use it in a limited extent. However you should have some idea about what your approach to qualitative data analysis will be. The course does not teach you 'how to do' qualitative data analysis per se.

27th January 2011, University of Surrey
Software Planning Seminar: A comparative overview of various software packages which assist in the analysis of qualitative (textual or multimedia) data.

It is not always easy to visualise exactly what a package offers when exploring it for the first time yourself. Equally when asking someone else for their opinion, it is not always easy to know what questions you should be asking. Most of the software packages which help the researcher to manage qualitative data, are excellent products in one way or several! Some times you choose the package that is already in situ and make good use of it; but if you have a choice about what to purchase for your research project, you may be in some uncertainty about how to proceed. You may have basic understanding about what a CAQDAS package will do, but the differences between what each package offers may be subtly but significantly different. During the seminar Christina Silver and Christine Rivers will raise some of the issues you may need to consider, and how some of the software programs differ in the way they handle such aspects.

Showcase Event : Exploring new developments in qualitative data capture and analysis, 23rd March 2011, Oxford, UK

Qualitative Innovations in CAQDAS (QUIC) and Digital Social Research are holding a Showcase Event to explore new developments in qualitative data capture and analysis, including mobile and location-based data generated, for example, through the use of smart phones and crowdsourcing, which directly engages members of the public in mass collaboration and the gathering of increasingly large datasets.

The Showcase presents the Digital Replay System (DRS) developed by the Digital Records research node ‘DReSS’ at the University of Nottingham. DRS is a next generation qualititative data analysis tool that seeks to enable researchers to exploit the burgeoning array of digital data, including bio-sensed, mobile and location-based data and large-scale data derived through crowdsourcing.

The Showcase provides researchers and practitioners with the opportunity to review and discuss cutting-edge developments in qualitative data capture and analysis, especially new tools and software which enable the capture, synchronization and use of traditional qualitative datasets alongside novel digital data.

Registration

The Showcase will take place at 23 Banbury Road, Keble College, Oxford on Wednesday 23rd of March, 2011. The cost is £48.00 + VAT. Please contact Megan Meredith-Lobay to register for the event. Registration closes on Monday the 14th of March, 2011. Limited parking is available. Please contact Megan for further details. Email: [log in to unmask]
