There’s a brilliant piece of research on the British Interactive Group’s website in the Knowledgebase section (www.big.uk.com) entitled, “Measuring the performance of interactive centres”. The study was undertaken by Tim Caulton.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Measuring the impact of science centres

Hi everyone,

Glasgow Science Centre is developing a substantial new exhibition called BodyWorks that will explore the science underpinning health and wellbeing. I want to assess the impact of this exhibition on healthcare and could do with some input as to how to go about this.

Do any of you know of studies that have researched the impact of exhibitions? Any ideas are very welcome.

The exhibition will give visitors the chance to examine their own fitness (by measuring sprint speed, grip strength, lung capacity, heart rate etc) and record their own data. There will also be a number of capsules exploring cutting edge health research to highlight the impact of this research on health and healthcare provision. There will also be a number of exhibits where the visitor can explore the basic human biology relating to the research. Finally there will be a Live Lab area where visitors can interact with experts and even take part in their research.

We could flag research studies which visitors could become involved in, aid communication of the science behind clinical trials, encourage visitors to take responsibility for their own health and provide info about organisations which could help etc etc. At the simplest level it may even just make visitors more comfortable chatting to their GP about their health. There are endless possibilities I guess. Alcohol awareness etc etc.

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Sarah
