But I am
not really sure this is about breaking down the walls between the ICA and the
RAEng; or getting science into the arts festivals.
Again – not putting
down the arts – I likes em! But why are cultural things only ever ‘arty
things’?
Its great
to find new audiences by infiltrating other festivals, but why can’t Cheltenham
Science Festival be considered a cultural occasion in its own right?

One possiblity could be
to persuade the organizers of Arts Festivals to add a science strand, which is
broadly what happened in Cheltenham, An incentive for inclusion is that such a
strand is that it attracts a different cohort of potential sponsors from the
arts element.

Indeed Roland. We tried very hard to encourage
a science and engineering dimension to the Cultural Olympiad (ie the UK-wide

Things may have changed, but three
years ago it was clear that the plan for the Cultural Olympiad was for it to be
a series of events and activities led by the arts community. End of.
This was not helped by the lack of
confidence that the sci/ eng communication community knew how to design and
deliver engaging and enriching public events, exhibitions and festivals.

I
was hoping others might reply on this (and maybe they will), because there has
been a lot of activity by a large number of science organisations (including
the British Science Association) to try to get a scientific dimension within
the 'cultural' mindset of LOCOG. So far we haven't succeeded. When many
artists, of many types, are happy to work creatively with scientists and scientific
ideas, and when so many of us see scientific knowledge and its applications as
integral parts of our culture, indeed shaping so much of our culture, it is a
shame that those determining 'cultural' policy seem completely blind to this.

I
liked Roland's point about "culture" bids that "have no
requirement for a science-based cultural programme".
Is
there going to be any scientific activity among the "cultural"
activities associated with the Olympic Games?
Looks
like something that the British Science Association might like to float.
After
all, there is plenty of talk of science and sport.
