Indeed Roland. We tried very hard to encourage a science and engineering dimension to the Cultural Olympiad (ie the UK-wide programme of 'cultural' events leading up to the Olympics). Things may have changed, but three years ago it was clear that the plan for the Cultural Olympiad was for it to be a series of events and activities led by the arts community. End of. This was not helped by the lack of confidence that the sci/ eng communication community knew how to design and deliver engaging and enriching public events, exhibitions and festivals. Haarrummphh. So far we haven't succeeded. When many artists, of many types, are happy to work creatively with scientists and scientific ideas, and when so many of us see scientific knowledge and its applications as integral parts of our culture, indeed shaping so much of our culture, it is a shame that those determining 'cultural' policy seem completely blind to this.
