Happy new year everyone,

I find it more than a little depressing that the only message on the
website from the Chief Executive is about what we are allowed to call
the organisation.
http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/web/AboutUs/index.htm

This is not the thread to get into the role of the British Science
Association but the fact that the new name seems more important for
comment than the work of the organisation seems to me a bit
depressing.

I'm sure I've said this before but jettisoning the moniker "British
Association for the Advancement of Science" distances the organisation
from all its massively impressive achievements of the past.
http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/web/AboutUs/OurHistory/index.htm

I was reading two popular science books over Christmas that glowingly
mentioned the "British Association for the Advancement of Science" and
as someone in the know I can link those achievements to the current
British Science Association. But who else reading them would have done
so?

The American Association for the Advancement of Science or AAAS seems
to cope very well with their name, why oh why didn't the BA take the
opportunity to 1. get rid of a confusing acronym and 2. get back to
their roots and just revert to the the old name? The "bee double ay
ess" or "BAAS" would be a much better option for them IMHO.
http://www.aaas.org/

But then a quick web search reveals that all the baas.XXX domains have
already been registered:
http://www.just-the-name.co.uk/whois.shtml?domain=baas&tld=all&x=0&y=0

Is the real reason for the choice of new name was that the
organisation was tardy in registering a domain?
