Hi Sarah,

Sounds like a very interesting interactive exhibit.

While not specific to science centre exhibitions, I have written a couple of
papers on measuring visitor impacts in science communication settings that
may be relevant.

First, a very brief comment on evaluating science communication impacts in
13 January 2011 issue of the journal Nature may be of interest (an extended
version will be in the next issue of the BSA publication People & Science):

http://academia.edu.documents.s3.amazonaws.com/1950327/Published_Nature_Comment__Evaluate_Impact_of_Communication_._E._Jensen_Nature_469__162__13_Jan._2011_.pdf

Second, an article to be published in the journal Visitor Studies
(co-authored with Emily Dawson, King's College London) argues for a more
contextual and long-term approach to evaluating visitor impacts:

http://academia.edu.documents.s3.amazonaws.com/1792963/Contextual_approaches_to_visitor_studies_research_VSJ_Oct_2010__pre-pub__version_for_distribution-final_.pdf

<http://academia.edu.documents.s3.amazonaws.com/1792963/Contextual_approaches_to_visitor_studies_research_VSJ_Oct_2010__pre-pub__version_for_distribution-final_.pdf>Some
example evaluation reports are also accessible full-text (and free) on this
website (given your mention of live interaction between experts and publics,
the Cambridge Science Festival report might be useful for pointing towards
possible impacts): http://warwick.academia.edu/EricJensen

Best wishes,
Eric
