Reliance on depth of field has a long, 'pre.Wellesian and pre-Bazinian history, hardly to be reduced to a "modernist turning-point"! See D. Bordwell's study 'Exceptionally Exact Perceptions: On Staging in Depth' (Chapter 6, in his On the History of Film Style).
