The TRIL Centre (www.trilcentre.org) is seeking to appoint one Research 
Assistant in Ethnography and Design (fixed term contract until December 31st 
2011).

The TRIL Centre looks at the physical, social and cognitive consequences of 
ageing and develops technologies to address them. TRIL is an active 
collaboration between researchers in academic, clinical and industry settings. 
Operating as a virtual centre with researchers based in UCD, TCD, NUIG and 
Intel, it tackles the problems associated with demographic ageing. The centre 
harnesses multidisciplinary ageing research, clinical expertise and enabling 
technology development and evaluation to support independent living.

Position Summary:
The Research Assistant in Ethnography and Design will join the TRIL Centre’s 
Technology & Design based in UCD CASL (Dublin – Ireland). The candidate will be 
joining a multidisciplinary team of biomedical engineers, software developers, 
designers and ethnographers. The candidate will have a track record of previous 
experience in conducting qualitative research and a strong interest in working 
in projects for the development technologies for independent living.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
A Research Assistant in Ethnography and Design’s responsibilities will include 
but not be limited to the following activities: 
•	Conduct primary, qualitative research on different projects related to 
'user' and organisational needs for, and responses to, new technologies in the 
health, social care and independent living arenas. 
•	Contribute to data collection; this will include help with recruitment and 
management of research participants, conducting fieldwork, processing data 
(fieldnotes, transcriptions), and with literature reviews. 
•	Contribute to data analysis. 
•	Produce reports of the work conducted in both written and spoken forms.  
•	Work to understand how existing technology and design developments could be 
swiftly integrated into existing health and social care systems. 
•	Participate in multi-person, multi-disciplinary research and development 
projects involving social scientists, engineers, clinicians and designers.

Selection Criteria
Mandatory:
•	Likely to have a background in one of the following disciplines: 
Anthropology, Sociology, Health Economics, Gerontology, Social Policy, Design. 
A Master degree is preferred. 
•	Fluency in English spoken and written. 
•	Self motivated but also have ability to provide meaningful contributions and 
work well in a multidisciplinary team. 
•	Expertise or demonstrable interest in developing health and social care 
related concepts, prototypes, or products would be an added advantage. 
•	Excellent communication and presentation skill.

Desirable:
•	History of Ethnographic / Design research and design accomplishments. 
•	Ability to work on business case / model development. 
•	Previous experience using NVivo or similar programme.

Salary: €21,850 - €27,679 per annum (Appointment on scale will be made 
commensurate with qualifications and experience and subject to the requirements 
of Budget 2011)
