Yes, that's a citizen science project - and astronomy is the classical 
area of citizen science.

But were the research question influenced or determined by the public? 
In my understanding, that was the claim that was being made.

Sorry for being so persistent. I'm not opposed to the idea that 
involvement of the public can be beneficial to science, but it also 
seems to me that there is a certain danger of group-think here, so if we 
want to make a convincing case for it, it is really important to disect 
the argument.

This becomes really relevant when this kind of argument is used to try 
to exert pressure on scientists (through funding arrangements or 
similar) to make science engagement part of the job and part of the 
portfolio of all scientists.
