Hi Faye,

......... re records - registration (it costs) with Data Protection register
etc,

Are you competent to check how used, advise on suitability for individual
and how to use PPE for noise, solder and vibration?

Have you got clear written criteria for onward referral to NHS services?

Have you got proformas in place?

If not fully competent who have you got as a more competent
advisor/problem-solver?

Are you setup as a company? If not need to be, probably need to pay
different class NI (in addition to a PAYE job) etc. Will have to do tax
return......

The HSE may expect more than one day per week - 20 hearing tests in a day =
200 will take 10 days minimum...... are you doing them in a quiet area
onsite or soundproof booth?

You could distribute and then review paper respiratory and vibration (whack
some skin and msd related questions in too) surveillance questionnaires and
then follow-up over time any symptomatic - do you have the skills, knowledge
and experience to do so in the manufacturing setting? Bear in mind any staff
where English isn't their first language as may need translating.......

Hope that helps,

Catherine

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Query- screening

Hello Faye

is the equipment in working order and calibrated?

are you competent to carry out the work ?

have you had any formal training on the screening process?

will you indemnity cover you ?

who will advise on the test results if they re abnormal?

and where will you store the records?

All things you need to consider

We have in the past had safety officers training to carry out he screening
but they could not report on the finding, I believe OH technicians also do
this but don't report on the findings.

Regards

Pauline

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Query

Good morning,

I wonder if I may bend your ear for some advice, I am a student occ health
nurse coming to the end of my diploma in September. I work for a company at
present carrying out health surviellance - I have been in this role for
three years. I was in the very fortunate position to be able to buy some OH
equipment with the intention of becoming an independant practitioner at the
end of the year.

My query is this - a friend of mine who own a manufacturing company and
employs 200 staff exposed to noise, vibration and solder fumes has asked me
to carry out some health surviellance one day a month after a discussion he
had with the HSE re OH. I am unsure if I am able to do this for him at the
moment and thought that some of you may have more insight.

Thanks for your help in advance - Faye
