Dear Colleagues,

With apologies for being slightly 'off-list' with this, and for cross-posting...

Those of you who are not at UK universities may be wondering what the fuss is about, as your own institutions may be unused to the level of state support we in the UK receive. Whatever your feelings about subsidised higher education, I hope it will suffice to say that cuts in that support are being introduced so suddenly and severely that our universities have no chance to adjust, and the ramifications could be catastrophic. Examples of what's happening, (especially in England), include an increase in students tuition fees by up to 300%, and a withdrawal of 80% state funding for teaching Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The official government petition site where people can register their dissent has been suspended (!), so colleagues at UCL and elsewhere have begun a petition about the cuts to teaching funding for Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (see http://humanitiesmatter.wordpress.com/ for details, links to the campaign and petition itself). It might be helpful to know that the site hosting the petition asks for a donation once you have signed, but this can be ignored (the money goes to the site, NOT to the campaign).

Please circulate to as many colleagues and friends of higher education that you can think of.... if you want to sign the petition it needs to be done NOW, as Parliament votes tomorrow night!
