"Are they good critters or bad?"
 
In a book I'll have to hunt for (Charbonneau, I think), the point is made quite well that many, many critters have a double symbolism, i.e. they symbolize both Christ and the devil. When I get home later, I'll find the book and give a response that's a bit more complete.
Rushing to whatever "O" antiphon is sung today...

Is there any way of knowing how old the painting is? I'm also wondering about the symbolism of the wyverns (is that what they are?) in their position in the iconographical scheme of this portal. Are they good critters or bad? -- Paul
