medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Jessica,

Many UK universities now include a work experience module in their undergraduate programmes. You have probably also found that most universities offer short courses for undergraduates and postgraduates in application and CV writing, interviewing skills etc, but that many do not consider these to be an appropriate credit-bearing part of their degree programmes.
Can you let us have your email address - I can contact you off list with a more detailed outline of what my university offers, and something of the problems which would arise if we made 'corporate' skills compulsory and credit-bearing. It would also be useful to have your definition of 'corporate' skills - it is potentially a very wide field.

Maddy

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Jessica,
You don't say so specifically, but i assume you mean under-graduate degree
schemes? It is already standard practice in most UK universities for
postgraduate students to undertake training and continuing development in
'professional skills' - which includes 'transferable skills', such as
grant applications. These are not necessarily formal modules as such
(particularly not for research degrees), but it is usually compulsory to
do a set number of hours of this sort of training each year, and it is
carefully monitored. The continuing professional development and training
in transferable or 'corporate' skills is compulsory for all post-graduate
students funded by the arts and social science research councils (AHRC,
ESRC), although the way in which this is undertaken is at the descretion
of the institution, and/or student - but again it is monitored annually by
both the institution and the funding body.
Best,
Janet Gunning
(an AHRC funded postgraduate student at a UK university)
