medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture My nomination for the silliest version of St. Lucy's eyes (although the del Crosso comes close) is in Lorenzo Lotto's _St Nicholas in Glory with Sts John the Baptist and Lucy_ (1527-29, Chiesa dei Carmini, Venice): http://www.wga.hu/art/l/lotto/1527-30/09nichol.jpg The eyes are hovering over a small green dish toward the bottom-right corner of the clouds. (Presumably because if they were *in* the dish, we couldn't see them from this angle.) A somewhat closer view: http://www.flickr.com/photos/claning/1098801798 At first glance, one might think this is some sort of UFO ;) ____________________________________________________________ O Chris Laning <[log in to unmask]> - Davis, California + http://paternoster-row.org - http://paternosters.blogspot.com ____________________________________________________________ ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
