A little after 11:34 today, our monitoring detected a degraded service from the Aspire service.
By 11:48 we had isolated the error down to a single web server and removed it from the pool of servers delivering Aspire. At 11:52, our monitoring service showed Aspire had returned to normal.
Diagnosis showed that the outage was due to a software failure on one of our web servers. The fault was with the web cache on this box, causing 503 errors to be returned for a percentage of customer requests. Some users will have seen a total outage whilst others will have seen no outage at all.
We resolved the issue and retuned the server back to the pool by 12:06.
We are going to investigate the feasibility of an extra health check monitor on the web cache, to detect potential problems before they manifest themselves as a total service outage.
