this is a most irresponsible request, and i beg indulgence . . . a student of mine, who has just taken my course on the representation of women in american cinema, wants to do a directed study examining the way women have been represented in international cinema over the past twenty or so years

my own work has focused on english language films and while i have some passing familiarity with films out of europe and asia i hardly know enough to advise her on where to start . . . since she’s leaving the US tomorrow for six weeks overseas i was hoping to arm her with some films to watch during that break, which gives me no time to do some exploring on my own – hence my request for a little outside support

if you can suggest any films that should be on her preliminary list i’d be grateful . . .  to save time please email me directly at  [log in to unmask]

many thanks

mike
