Personally I just find it weird that the NHS are putting in place a system that was removed from the way that local authorities processed DSA, due to the problems with student not spending their DSA monies appropriately. Could universities act as the student's agent and handle the money on the student's behalf? A co-ordinated suppliers response would be helpful as well given that many are clearly nervous about continuing to provide support for NHS funded students. We didn't get the letter from NHS either. We found out because we had another query for NHS Bursaries and happened to phone them up. Even if NHS had informed all concerned parties appropriately, I cannot see this system being workable. Should a letter or petition be put together in the interests of disabled students who needn't have to run an accounts department whilst studying? We will make funds available directly to students to cover these payments and therefore from next month, suppliers of goods and services will need to invoice students directly. This change brings payment of the allowance in line with the way that we pay all other bursaries and allowances..." Note that one London-based taxi company who are able invoice the funding body directly rather than charge students has already said they'll no longer provide quotes for NHS-funded students because of this.
