Hello Dominic

One thing we did which worked was using SurveyMonkey. Ok, it was a survey and we all know these can be difficult to get completed etc. but it was easy to use for the student and for the administrator.

I work in FE so this might not be as useful in HE, but for other FE providers here is an example of how it worked well for us:

For all our 1;1 students we used to give them a paper survey to complete (about the use of the service, did it fulfil their needs, was it easy to access etc..), they would complete it either with the 1;1 teacher or they would hand it in to the 1:1 teacher, so no one ever really gave their true thoughts, so the process was a waste of time.

Using SurveyMonkey - they were left alone to complete it online, they did not need help nor did anyone else see what they had written, so they were free to express their true feelings/views....and so it was a useful exercise.

It might be worth considering using it? You could say that you will be picking a random completed survey and that person will get a book token.....offering a possible incentive to students to complete it....just an idea.

Regards, Paul

Subject: Consulting and Engaging with Disabled Students

Hi everyone,

I wanted to get some ideas as to how other institutions consult and engage with disabled students?

Is this done via student forums or guild societies? Or on an individual basis via feedback forms?

We have tried over several years to engage students with a Disabled Student's Network, leaving the agenda and direction student driven but supported via our service. The reception has been lukewarm (over several years) and we are looking at ways to improve this. We have tried at induction events to encourage people to sign up for the student's network but historically we failed to keep student's interested.

What do other University's do?

Best Wishes,

Dominic
