Dear All,

There are a limited number of places remaining for the forthcoming Geography and the New Empirics event, taking place in London on 20-21 January 2011. To register, please visit the event website at: http://www.scgrg.org/geography-and-the-new-empirics/. The remaining places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The cost for the two days is £15, and a limited number of travel bursaries are available.

The full programme is available at http://www.scgrg.org/geography-and-the-new-empirics/geography-and-the-new-empirics-provisional-programme/. The first day consists of workshops at UCL on Generating and gathering data in face of excess (Owain Jones [CCRI, Gloucester] and Chris Bear [Geography, Aberystwyth]), Experimentality, encounters and ethics (Jo Norcup [Geography, Glasgow] and Amanda Rogers [Geography, Royal Holloway]), Collaborating and distributing expertise (Gail Davies [Geography, UCL] and Emma Roe [Geography, Southampton]), and Interpretation and the challenge of making sense (Russell Hitchings [Geography, UCL] and Elaine Ho [Geography, Leeds]).

The second day centres on research paper sessions around the themes of Research encounters and processes, Creative practices and experimentalism and Working with people and things. The event concludes with a panel discussion between Celia Lury (Sociology, Goldsmiths), Ben Anderson (Geography, Durham), David Demeritt (Geography, Kings), Kye Askins (Geography, Northumbria) and Malcolm Fairbrother (Geography, Bristol).

The event is aimed especially at postgraduate and early career researchers and will provide a relatively informal environment in which to discuss the research process and its implications.

If you have any questions about the event, please contact the organising committee at [log in to unmask].

Best wishes,

Chris Bear
