I can't say I'm surpprised: think it will have to do with:-
1) The BPS has a rather ponderous way of responding to consultations - I've volunteered to help respond to the social care one so I'm getting some experience of this.  Those who volunteer have to draft the response, and the danger is that it will just follow the parameters of the government's fake consultation process.
2)  The emphasis is on using scientific evidence to frame the response.  This is consistent with the self image of hte BPS as a scientific society - and with ideological reasings of psychology as science.
Together this means that it is probably unlikely that the BPS will issue a statement such as those below.

The BPS isn't on the list of organisations objecting here...

Does anyone know why not? Other orgs on the list are also charities, so it can't be that...

December 2010

Dear NHS Supporter

WHITE PAPER CAMPAIGN MAKES PROGRESS
As you may be aware, the government have pushed back plans to introduce the health bill until early next year. Not only this, but Oliver Letwin has been called in by No 10 as a troubleshooter amid the growing controversy surrounding the proposed upheaval. So we must keep up the pressure. And the delay gives us more time to continue lobbying.
Many NHS supporters have now written to their MPs helping to show that the public share the concern of NHS staff. The scale of opposition is unprecendented. Below we have listed the major organisations expressing serious concerns and a selection of quotes from some of their official responses.

CONCERNED ORGANISATIONS

Royal College of General Practitioners
British Medical Association

Royal College of Nurses

NHS Confederation

UNISON

UNITE

GMB

The King's Fund

The Nuffield Trust

The Social Market Foundation

Civitas

Macmillan Cancer Support

Mind

Age UK

QUOTES FROM ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSES

"We believe the plans for free choice of GP practice will be damaging in terms of continuity of care, health inequalities and, potentially, patient safety." RCGP

"A market-based approach risks fragmentation, inefficiency and increased transaction costs." BMA

"We are gravely concerned that the Government takes little or no account of the potential impact on disadvantaged or disengaged individuals or communities.” RCN

"After analysing the proposed new system, we have identified significant risks, worrying uncertainties and unexploited opportunities." NHS Confederation

"We question a fundamental reorganisation, when evidence shows that health outcomes and public satisfaction have improved in recent years." The King's Fund

"The NHS is facing the most difficult financial times in its history. Now is not the time for ripping up internal structures yet again on scant evidence base." Civitas

"At best this will be a waste of time, at worst a waste of money." The Social Market Foundation

"Dealing with the sick and vulnerable requires more than a conveyor belt, quick-fix approach ... Supermarkets should stick to selling fruit and vegetables."

Clare Gerada, Chair of the Royal College of GPs

ACTION CHECKLIST
With your support we will keep lobbying MPs and raising public awareness. In the new year we are planning events and media work to boost our effort to stop the bill progressing through Parliament. For more ideas about how to support the campaign please see the action checklist on our website.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
