Reading your post and especially your remark about "going backwards at times instead of forwards" I could not help thinking of Judith Butler's superb and accessible paper "Sexual politics, torture, and secular time" which you can access if you wish at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1468-4446.2007.00176.x/full Professor Butler's paper raises some fascinating questions about how what is fought for in order to bring about progressive change sometimes functions in reactionary ways.
