Reading your post and especially your remark about "going backwards at times instead of forwards" I could not help thinking of Judith Butler's superb and accessible paper "Sexual politics, torture, and secular time" which you can access if you wish at: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1468-4446.2007.00176.x/full Professor Butler's paper raises some fascinating questions about how what is fought for in order to bring about progressive change sometimes functions in reactionary ways.

Called 'phallometric testing', gay men - and according to De Spiegel at least one lesbian - are shown pornography and a machine is used to supposedly 'prove' whether of not they are gay.
