Dear AllStat,

I would like to draw to your attention to the latest opportunities for PhD
studentships that are currently available with the MRC-HPA Centre for
Environment & Health.

Note: Closing date for applications: Thursday 13th January 2011.

-----
3-Year PhD Studentships Available from October 2011
-----

Applications are invited for up to ten PhD studentships within the MRC-HPA
Centre for Environment and Health, starting in October 2011. We particularly
seek candidates with a strong interest in cardio-respiratory disease,
reproductive, environmental and spatial epidemiology, environmental
sciences, risk assessment and modelling, air and water pollution,
biomarkers, environmental toxicology, biostatistics and metabonomics.

The Centre is a joint collaboration between Imperial College London and
Kingıs College London with the mission to become an international centre of
excellence for research and training on the health effects of environmental
pollutants, and the translation of knowledge acquired into national and
international policy. The Centre has an emphasis on collaborative work
between its constituent research groups and students will be part of a
multidisciplinary team with internationally recognised expertise.

As a minimum, attainment of a UK 2:1 degree or equivalent, and appropriate
training at Masters level in a relevant discipline is expected. Successful
applicants must fulfil the College admissions criteria prior to enrolment.
The studentships provide a stipend of £18,000 p.a. Tuition fees are covered
at the Home/EU rate. There is no provision for overseas (non Home/EU)
student fees within this scheme.

Details of the available PhD projects for these studentships can be found on
the Centre website at the following address:

http://www.environment-health.ac.uk

-----
Projects for the studentships include:
- Modelling the mortality effects of global and local environmental factors
- Bayesian methods for integration of individual and aggregated data in
epidemiological studies of environment and health.
- Identifying predictive biomarkers of human cardiovascular disease risk
using metabolic profiling.
- Health effects of welding.
- Health effects of indoor nitrogen dioxide.
- Health effects of environmental exposure to agricultural pesticides.
- Statistical methods for the analysis and interpretation of correlated
exposure metrics within a time series framework.
- Development of uncertainty analysis of the CMAQ modelling system in the
UK.
- Community health impacts of large scale biocomposting.
- Investigation of the effects, and cellular translocation, of inhaled
nano-sized environmental and manufactured materials at the blood-gas barrier
of the lung: implications for cardiovascular reactivity.
- Development and application of novel chiral analytical methods for
metabolic profiling.

Additional studentship projects may be posted in the near future.
