We have three statistical genetics / bioinformatics PhD projects available, which will be awarded provisionally depending on the quality of applicants.

1. Genetic risk estimation for rheumatoid arthritis (Professor Cathryn Lewis)

2. Development of systems-biology approaches for next-generation-sequence analysis (Dr Thomas Schlitt)

3. Using Third Generation DNA sequencing to infer ancestry for forensic applications (Dr Michael Weale)

All three are available as 3-year PhD awards via KCL Heath Schools studentships (closing date 10 Jan 2011):

http://www.kcl.ac.uk/schools/health/study/studentships/genetics/s16.html

The third is also available as a 4-year PhD award (with initial training year) via a KCL BBSRC Doctoral Training Grant studentship (closing date 6 Jan 2011):

In addition, the PhD programme in Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry (http://www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/departments/?locator=10&context=1227) has a research strand in statistical genetics, with students supervised by Cathryn Lewis, Fruhling Rijsdijk and Thomas Price at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. Students develop statistical methods and apply them to studies of psychiatric disorders.

The Statistical Genetics Unit at KCL provides a strong environment for post-graduate training in statistical genetics:
