Social Science Internship in the Health Research and Innovation Group at Intel – Ireland 2011

The Health Research and Innovation Group at Intel is looking for a postgraduate intern in social science. Interns will spend between 9 and 11 months with the team.

The world's health and social care systems are rarely out of the news. Rapid population ageing, welfare and health reform, and the rise of chronic diseases remind us of the huge challenges to the status quo of the social, medical and care professions as well as individuals' own personal management of health and wellness.

What roles can technology play in shaping how individuals, communities, care professionals, governments and nations address these issues? During an internship with Intel Labs you can play a part in research which addresses some of the challenges ahead.

To date, interns in this group have been integrated into a range of local and international projects and can expect to join multidisciplinary teams of technologists, social scientists, business and health specialists, and designers. There is the real opportunity of putting design thinking, social science theory and enquiry and hands on design prototyping into application. Our aim is to give interns a central position in projects. Internships are paid positions.

Responsibilities:
An intern's responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following activities:
* Conduct primary, qualitative research to understand 'user' and organisational needs for, and responses to, new technologies in the health, social care and independent living arenas
* Work to understand how existing technology and design developments could be swiftly integrated into existing health and social care systems
* Participate in multi-person, multi-disciplinary research and development projects involving social scientists, engineers, clinicians and designers
* Interact and collaborate with researchers in the TRIL Centre - Technology Research For Independent Living (www.trilcentre.org)

Qualifications:
* You must be enrolled currently in a doctoral programme in a European university or Higher Education establishment. You are likely to be enrolled in a course in Anthropology, Gerontology, Sociology, Health Economics, Social Policy, Geography or related discipline
* Fluency in English. Ability in one or more other major European languages desirable
* History of ethnographic or gerontological research accomplishments
* Self motivated but also have ability to provide meaningful contributions and work well in a multidisciplinary team
* Expertise or demonstrable interest in developing ageing, health and social care related concepts, prototypes, or  products would be an added advantage
* Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills.
