New types of „Joint Displays“ described by John Creswell and Vicky Plano in the recently published in the second edition of their book „Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research“ (http://www.sagepub.com/books/Book233508) can be realized with MAXQDA: Quote Matrix is a joint display of coded segments (themes) and variables. It lists quotation of respondents with particular characteristics. Typology Table combines in merged analysis qualitative theme data and quantitative data based on a typology or classification Crosstabs –compares the number of coded segments for selected subgroups of documents. MAXQDA has supported mixed methods approaches since two decades by offering options to combine a matrix of quantitative data with qualitative data. With version 10, two types of variables can be analyzed in combination with qualitative data like interviews, field notes or observation protocols: document variables are linked to the entire document (e.g an interview) and code variables are linked to parts of documents (e.g. attributes of the different speakers of focus groups). MAXQDA supports all types of variable, not only categorical variables. Further mixed methods functions are offered by the visual tools Code-Matrix Browser and Code-Relation-Browser. Both unique features give visual representations of code frequencies and allow for comparing selected documents in a visual way.
