Does anyone have any more recent research, I have looked but can’t seem to find anything, perhaps I am looking for something that doesn’t exist!

Gloves should be worn whenever contact with blood is anticipated. Although wearing gloves does not prevent injury, the effect of the needle being wiped on the glove may reduce the volume of blood to which the hand is exposed, thereby reducing the volume inoculated and the risk of infection. In some areas, double gloving may be considered

Can I ask where the research base is for the argument that wearing gloves will ‘wipe’ the blood from a needle if a needle stick accident happens.

I always thought that there would still be a risk posed from anything in the bore of the needle, if so the glove wearing argument may instil a false sense of security.

I would love to hear what everyone else thinks or read any research to support this if anyone has any.

our policy is gloves should be worn for any procedure where there may be risk on sharps injury, as any blood is 'wiped' by the glove before breaking the skin - appraciate that this applies far more to theatre setting, arterial bloods, however, we seem to have a farily high sharps injury rate in general, so try to set an example by wearing gloves for any jabs or venepunture.

Dear List,

One of our IC crew has been kicking up a fuss that we are not routinely using gloves for our vaccinations (in this case Flu),

Just like to canvas opinion from OH colleagues on current / best practice.

I am aware of the benefits for blood taking (the glove helps to wipe the needle),

but nothing specific for vaccinations.

Looking forward to your thoughts

Campbell
